CEO, South East Texas Regional Advisory Council (SETRAC)

I began my career as a hospital administrator after gaining my MHA from George Washington University in 1981. I have had a progressive career path in both for profit and not for profit facilities including acute, rehab, psych, and long term acute care. For the past seven years I have been CEO of SETRAC where we have united over 150 hospitals and 75 EMS agencies to work as a team focused on disaster preparedness and response, as well as best practices for trauma, stroke, cardiac, and perinatal care. As examples of our meaningful work, the stroke and cardiac committees selected key data elements and compared them with national data. Hospitals submit their data to us quarterly, and we create “CEO” reports for hospitals to compare performance with all other hospitals. Since no one wants to be a poor performer, results naturally improve. In stroke, we now likely lead the nation with the timely administration of tPA and defray in excess of $3.6m per year in preventable spending on stroke care. With Disaster Preparedness, I can share similar novel approaches that gained SETRAC international headlines during Harvey, and led to us being cited as a model coalition in the recent Harvey Assessment by the Dept. Of Homeland Security. Also, yesterday I reviewed the budget proposal from ASPR to Congress where SETRAC receives recognition on page 51. SETRAC is “Switzerland” in our intensely competitive market. It is accomplished by relationships and trust.
